New range of multifunctional pumps introduced onto SA market

Hydraulics specialist Enerpac introduced its new range of EVO-System multifunctional synchronous lifting system pumps, which are suitable for use in mining operations, in April.
Enerpac Africa and sub-Saharan Africa director Neil Watson informs Mining Weekly that the pump has been well received by the market and its sales have been steadily increasing.
Watson says there are many uses for synchronous lifting systems.
“The system, which comprises hydraulic pumps and cylinders, enables operators to move and manoeuvre large objects and structures,” says Watson, who adds that using a manual system to control multiple cylinders is a long, complicated and labour-intensive process.
The EVO System can connect up to four units, while being controlled by one hydraulic power unit (HPU) control.
The HPU control enables the operator to use up 48 cylinders with the same accuracy at the same time, with multiple cylinder capacities and strokes, explains Watson.
Moreover, he says the EVO-System allows for these tasks to be performed safely and efficiently.
Watson explains that the EVO-System continually monitors each cylinder’s position and reviews the difference between leading and lagging cylinders. It also interprets which corresponding valves to operate and allows or blocks oil flow to the cylinders.
“Therefore, the faster cylinders stop and wait for the slower cylinders, until all cylinders are automatically within the required synchronous tolerance,” he explains.
The EVO-System pump can have up to 12 lifting points. It is a two-stage pump, with oil flows of 11.1 ℓ/min at 200 bar, and 2.1 ℓ/min to 4.01 ℓ/min at 700 bar. Each pump has a 3 kW motor and a voltage of between 230 V and 400 V. It also has a frequency of 15 Hz to 60 Hz and a control voltage of 24 V of direct current.
Watson adds that the pump is also equipped with electronics and electrical engineering group Siemens’ Simatic human-machine interface programmable logic controller (PLC) that has a 22.86 cm touch screen.
“The pump weighs 800 kg, exerts a maximum pressure of 700 bar, has a transductor span of 800 bar and a 250 ℓ reservoir,” explains Watson, adding that the pump’s hydraulic oil requirement complies with ISO 32.
He points out that the system can operate in temperatures of between 0 ºC and 35 ºC, but cautions that the PLC touch screen will start to freeze below 0 ºC.
The EVO-System has data storage and recording capabilities at user-defined intervals and can be used with single- or double-acting 700 bar cylinders, which have the same or differing capacities.
“The systems have a variable-frequency drive motor for improved synchronisation, which is a standard global product offering,” he notes.
Watson adds that a single operator controls all movements and the EVO-System has an easy user-interface setup, control and navigation system.
“The EVO-System delivers a comprehensive understanding and management of a lifting operation from a central control position, which improves the levels of safety and operational productivity by up to 60%,” he boasts, adding that the programmable fail-safe monitoring and safety alarms significantly reduce the risk of operational accidents.
In the mining industry, the EVO-System can be used for several applications, such as dragline crane, excavator and opencast mining maintenance.
“The EVO-System can also be used for other industries, including industrial building, permanent hydraulic installations and power generation, as well as the oil, gas and petrochemicals sectors,” concludes Watson.

Port Expansion Through Land Reclamation

“When you sail into Rotterdam’s Europort and see the new Maasvlakte 2, enter the Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone Project (KPIZ) in Abu Dhabi or visit Hong Kong’s container terminals, it’s hard to imagine that these areas were once simply wide expanses of water,” stated René Kolman, secretary general, International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) and Jan van’t Hoff, independent consulting engineer.

These port expansion projects are just a few of the many infrastructure developments that owe their existence to the wonders of dredging and land reclamation.

“Land reclamation is land that seemingly appears out of nowhere. And how do dredging contractors create something from nothing? These mega-infrastructures are in fact the domain of engineers specialised in the planning, design and construction of land reclamation using hydraulic fill. And such constructions are only possible because of the dredging industry’s innovative and intensive work, both theoretical and practical, into the characteristics of hydraulic fill. Without suitable hydraulic fill, land reclamation for port expansions would not be possible,” they added.

“Yet, despite its economic importance, a thorough study of hydraulic fill has long been overlooked in the literature of dredging – until now. Only recently, after several years of rigorous research and writing, with contributions from a score of highly respected engineers, is hydraulic fill getting the attention it deserves.”

The recently published book, Hydraulic Fill Manual for Dredging and Land Reclamation Works (2012) was guided into existence under the stewardship of the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA) and CUR Building & Infrastructure. Its two editor-experts in the field, Jan van ‘t Hoff and Art Nooy van der Kolff clearly and comprehensively tackle the complexities of hydraulic fill operations.

Hydraulic fill is the process where sediment or rock excavated by dredgers from the seabed or other borrow areas, is transported and ultimately placed into the designated reclamation area. For each of these phases of excavation, transport and placement, a hydraulic filling method is used, meaning that a soil and water mixture is created to facilitate dredging, transport or placement of the fill material. The fill material is then placed as a mixture of the fill (sand) and water into the reclamation site.

But this is the simple mechanics. Before a land reclamation project can commence, months or often years of research are invested in determining the best possible work methods and the availability and suitability of the hydraulic fill.
To begin with, the foundation of constructing a safe reclamation site is collecting a wide range of data. Data collection includes desk studies, field work and laboratory testing. It means gathering bathymetrical and topographical data and geological and geotechnical information in both the borrow and reclamation areas. Add to that hydraulic, meteorological and environmental data and then follow this with reporting on soil and rock classifications and descriptions using various internationally accepted standards.

This data is used during the pre-construction, construction and post-construction stages. Geostatistical methods will be used to develop models of the borrow and reclamation areas. All this information can ultimately be applied to an environmental impact assessment, which in most countries is a requirement in order to get work permits.

The Ralated Article: Philippines: RDC OKs Additional Cost for PHUMP Phase III

The Regional Development Council (RDC) 3 has passed a resolution endorsing the proposed increase in cost of the Pinatubo Hazard Urgent Mitigation Project (PHUMP) Phase III of the Department of Public Works and Highways.

“The additional cost of P463.6 million will be incurred due to the existence of implementation concerns both technical and administrative which include the extension and addition of consultation services, price escalation, increase in discharge pipe length, slope protection works at closure dike of the Porac-Gumain River, variation in quantity of embankment sections, construction of another bridge in the City of San Fernando to replace the existing bailey, and to cover the cost of Engineering Administrative Overhead,” RDC Vice Chairman and National Economic and Development Authority regional director Severino Santos explained.
“Since the project is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the peso-yen exchange rate differential is also another factor,” Santos added.

PHUMP is among the major engineering interventions initiated in Central Luzon to mitigate the disastrous effects of lahar/mudflow and flooding from the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991.

Its Phase III, which started in 2006, focuses on flood control works for the Porac-Gumain River in Pasac delta and the City of San Fernando.

This project phase is divided into two parts: the first deals with the detailed engineering design, preconstruction and construction supervision of flood and mudflow control works in the areas of concern, and contract packages which includes dredging of local channels and major rivers and raising of roads and construction of new bridges.

The monitoring and planning of Non-Structural Measures and Institutional Capability Building (ICab) is also part of the program.

This process will led to the formulation of plans on Watershed Management, Disaster Preparedness and Flood Management, and Land Use Management.
RDC 3 is the highest policy-making body in Central Luzon and serves as the counterpart of the NEDA Board at the subnational level.

It is the primary institution that coordinates and sets the direction of all economic and social development efforts in the region and serves as a forum where local efforts can be related and integrated with national development activities.
Council members include all governors, city mayors, municipal mayors of capital towns, presidents of municipal mayors’ league, regional directors of national government agencies and representatives from the private sector.

Fortescue’s Forrest bullish on iron ore sector

Fortescue Metals Group chairman Andrew Forrest remains bullish about the future of the iron ore sector and says the current volatility in prices will settle at a sustainable level.
West Australian premier Colin Barnett and Mr Forrest, have played down concerns over the end of the mining boom, saying $160 billion worth of projects would still drive the state’s economy. Mr Barnett toldFinancial Review Sunday, that claims WA was on the brink of recession following the dip in commodity prices and a slowing in the pace of mineral development activity were off the mark.

“There’s still basically $160 billion of resource projects either in construction or going into construction in Western Australia, so it’s coming off its peak but that’s all that’s happened,” he said.
Mr Forrest wrote off some forecasters’ predictions of an iron ore price of $US80 ($86.51) per tonne in the near to mid-future. Goldman Sachs is forecasting an iron ore price of $US80 for 2015 as the market switches into oversupply.
But Mr Forrest said such predictions underestimated the response from higher-cost suppliers who would likely halt production at that level.
“I think that’s underestimating the fact there’ll be a supply response at any level like that,” he said. “That’s really thinking the domestic industry in China can keep going at that price and that the very undercapitalised Indian iron ore export industry can survive at that price.”

Dredging of new or approach channels

The development of new berths and deepening of the port’s approach channel require large volumes of dredging of seabed and involve sizeable investment. While different degrees of technological sophistication, in terms of the requirement of dredging vessels and other dredging equipment are needed in different projects, bulk of the demand for dredging actually flows from two categories of dredging in the port sector, viz. capital dredging and maintenance dredging. Ports provide the main stay of demand for the dredging industry, accounting for bulk of the turnover of dredging companies. However, economies of scale in the dredging industry require support also in terms of many other non-port related dredging activities such as dredging for inland waterways, reclamation of sea land, construction of bridges etc.

The aggregate Indian market for dredging, mainly from the port sector is estimated to be currently worth about Rs. 6 billion, with a major market thrust coming from development of new as well as existing ports. A sizeable demand is also expected to come from future development of inland waterway development and deepening of draft of approach channels at some of the major ports like JNPT. Dredging thus, constitutes one of the major continuous activities being undertaken in the port sector and has a substantial cost component attached to it, out of the total port development project costs.

Broadly, the dredging market in Indian port sector can be categorized into two segments:

Capital Dredging
Dredging of new or approach channels, construction of new berths and other marine-side infrastructures like single bouy moorings (SBMs), jetties and wharfs etc., require artificial draft to be created at the time of establishing the
facility, which can be termed as capital dredging. However, most of the Indian major ports have been established several decades back and since existing drafts of these ports are often adequate for contemporary larger vessels to call on them, capital dredging projects need to be undertaken for deepening the existing draft of the existing approach channel and berths. One of the ambitious capital dredging projects currently in the reckoning is the proposal for deepening and
widening of the approach channel of Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), to pave way for mainline container vessels to call on the port. The government has also been trying to revive the Sethusamudram Canal project, which promises to the largest ever project to be conceived in India’s maritime history. Though the Sethusamudram
project has many in-built advantages for India, the vast dredging volumes involved in the project is mind-boggling and proponents of the project have found it difficult to justify the project on commercial terms.

Capital dredging projects in Indian major ports have tremendous scope with most Indian ports seeking to upgrade their marine infrastructure to attract larger vessels. The proposed project for deepening of the approach channel to JNPT is one of the most ambitious capital dredging projects in pipeline, that is expected to open up the Nhava Sheva port for mainline shipping operations. The ports of Ennore and Tuticorin have also undertaken major capital dredging projects for deepening their approach channels. With increasing emphasis on building the port capability for handling ever larger ships, the port sector’s requirement for deeper draft facilities is increasing in all major ports. dredging pump ,  sand pump, and gravel pump  had play an important role in the process.

River dredging Gravel pump

Series ES(G) gravel pumps are horizontal and single-casing centrifugal pumps. The type ESG pumps are with high-head.
Model Explanation
Application
Gravel pumps are designed for continuously handling the higher abrasive slurry, which contain too big particles to be pumped by common pumps. They are suitable for delivering slurry in mining, explosive-sludge in metallurgy, sand mining, dredging,  and other fields.

Construction of this series of pumps is of single casing connected by means of clamp bands and they have wide passage. The wet parts are made of Ni-hard and high-Chrome wear-resistant alloys. The discharge direction of pump can be oriented in any direction of 360°. They have advantages of easy installation, good performance of NPSH and wear-resistance.

Material advantage
The main wear parts in slurry pump are wet parts. Excellence adopts many kinds of anti-abrasive materials to extend the lifetime of wet parts. The wet parts material in standard ES series pump is high chrome alloy KmTBCr26, which is a wear resistant white iron that offers excellent performance under erosive conditions. But in order to meet different requirements, Excellence can also produce wet parts in other materials to replace high chrome alloy such as Hastelloy, CD4MCu, and other anti-abrasive materials.

centrifugal pump's Impeller forms and pumping designs

Centrifugal pumps contain rotating impellers within stationary pump casings- To allow the impeller to rotate freely within the pump casing, a small clearance is designed to be maintained between the impeller and the pump casing. To maximize the efficiency of a centrifugal pump, it is necessary to minimize the amount of liquid leaking through this clearance from the high pressure or discharge side of the pump back to the low pressure or suction side.
Despite the various application types of centrifugal pumps in technical plants the operating ranges of the different designs depending upon size of the delivered flow, the delivery head and the number of revolutions another characteristic impeller form results in the case of aiming at an optimal efficiency. With the help of the rapidity and/or the specific number of revolutions the impellers can be split up according to their targeted application .
If very large volume flow rates are needed, or if the velocity of flow is limited in the entrance for reasons of the suction behaviour, radial flow pumps are frequently implemented in a multi-flow way. Thereby two impellers with same dimensions deliver in a common housing. With same delivery head the two flow rates are added together.
Since the maximum delivery head of an impeller is fixed by the pressure factor in dependence of the design and upward the number of revolutions limited by firmness reasons, for the achievement of large delivery heads several pump stages are connected in series. The delivery heads of the single stages are added with same flow rate.

Some wear or erosion will occur at the point where the impeller and the Centrifugal pump casing nearly come into contact. This wear is due to the erosion caused by liquid leaking through this tight clearance and other causes. As wear occurs, the clearances become larger and the rate of leakage increases. Eventually, the leakage could become unacceptably large and maintenance would be required on the pump.
To minimize the cost of pump maintenance, many centrifugal pumps are designed with wearing rings. Wearing rings are replaceable rings that are attached to the impeller and the pump casing to allow a small running clearance between theCentrifugal pumps impeller and the pump casing without causing wear of the actual impeller or centrifugal pump casingmaterial. These wearing rings are designed to be replaced periodically during the life of a pump and prevent the more costly replacement of the impeller or the casing.
