Iron-ore developer Gindalbie Metals on Thursday reported that its Karara joint venture concentrator had produced the first batch of premium quality magnetite concentrate grading 68% iron.
All key areas of the concentrator have now been completed, with commissioning of the final polishing circuit under way.
The miner told shareholders that, while individual areas of the concentrator have successfully operated at their design rate, the project team was now focusing on ensuring that all elements of the plant could be successfully integrated to ensure continuous production at the nameplate capacity of eight-million tonnes a year of magnetite concentrate.
MD Tim Netscher noted that production of the first ever premium-grade concentrate was a key milestone for the project.
“This would be amongst the highest grade, best quality iron-ore products every produced in Western Australia and it certainly marks the first time a product of this nature has ever been produced in the Midwest region.”
Netscher said that the concentrate production was one of the final boxes that investors wanted to have ticked.
“While there is still more work to do to tie all areas of the plant together to work in harmony and achieve the production rate on a continuous and reliable basis, we have now proven beyond any doubt that the Karara concentrator works, and works well, producing an exceptional product that will be in high demand in global markets.”
Meanwhile the Karara project has now shipped some 4.8-million tonnes of product through the port of Geraldton, with 1.3-million tonnes of this made up of concentrate.
